WHAT IS A VOLKSSPORT? It is an organized, non-competitive event (walk, bike, swim, etc.) designed to appeal to everyone. Volkswalking (walking event) got its name from its origins in Europe. Today there are thousands of volkssport clubs around the world, allied to the International Volkssport Federation (IVV). A walk event is not a pledge walk nor a race; it is a fun activity you do with a club, with your family, with your pet, or all by yourself. Walks are usually 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) long, but shorter distances are usually available.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Everyone is welcome. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? FREE -- most events allow free participation. There is no charge if you do not want IVV credit, but everyone must register and turn the start card in at the finish. Registration and directions are located at each start point. All Year Round Events (YRE) have self-service start boxes. No pre-registration. IVV credit is $3.00. Participants may walk for EVENT and DISTANCE credit without limit, however you must pay an additional fee for a new "start card" each time. You must register and buy a start card each day even if you are repeating an event for distance credit only. No refunds.
WHAT IS A YEAR ROUND EVENT? A YRE is a self-guided walking event available most days of the year. The local club selects a trail, draws maps, writes detailed walking instructions, and sets up a permanent starting point. You arrive during the stated open hours, register, take a map, and enjoy the route.
ARE THERE ANY STIPULATIONS? All participants in these events accept the guidelines of the AVA and agree to observe the principles of good sportsmanship and safety. Littering is not permitted. The events will take place regardless of weather conditions. However, participants should not walk during severe weather.
WHAT ABOUT IVV CREDIT? All of our volkssporting events are sanctioned by the AVA, a member of the IVV and count toward acquisition of achievement awards. IVV books or insert pages will be available.
ANYTHING ELSE? DISCLAIMER - Although every effort is being made to make these safe, enjoyable and memorable events, the sponsor is not liable for accidents, thefts and/or material damage.
AWARD No award.
WHAT TIMES CAN I WALK A YRE? Walk during daylight hours only.
ANY CONSIDERATIONS FOR REFRESHMENTS & COMFORT? Water & restrooms at start point and along most of the routes. Park restrooms are not always open.
